Direct-drive and clutch-motor machines sit at opposite ends of the price and technology spectrum.

Direct drive

A direct-drive machine has the servo motor built into the machine head — no belt, no separate motor. It is quiet, precise and very energy-efficient. The 6150D is our best-selling direct-drive model.

Clutch motor

A clutch-motor machine uses an external motor connected by belt. It is cheaper to buy but louder and more wasteful to run.

The real cost difference

Direct-drive machines cost more upfront but save on electricity every single day. For a busy workshop running many machines, the saving quickly exceeds the price difference. If budget is the priority, start with a clutch-motor machine and add a servo motor upgrade later.
