The 4-thread overlock is the standard edge-finishing machine in garment production. It trims the fabric edge and overcasts it with a neat four-thread seam in one operation — the finish you see on t-shirts, sportswear and most woven garments.
On a production line it sits alongside a lockstitch machine: the lockstitch sews the main seams, the overlock finishes edges and joins stretch panels. If you produce knitwear, this is the first finishing machine to add.
Choose 4-thread for general garment work. If you sew denim or heavy cotton that needs a stronger seam, the 5-thread machine adds a safety stitch on top of the standard overlock.
