The local garment industry

Nairobi hosts the largest concentration of tailoring workshops and second-hand clothing markets in East Africa — Gikomba and Nyamakima are dense with small operators. The Athi River EPZ and Nairobi industrial areas house export-oriented garment factories producing under AGOA, which buy in a more structured, higher-volume way. Regional towns such as Nakuru, Kisumu and Eldoret have dealers and tailoring schools that purchase in batches.

Power supply

Kenya’s mains is 240V / 50Hz — slightly higher than West Africa, but well within tolerance for our machines. Supply is generally stable in Nairobi and major towns, though voltage fluctuation still occurs, so a voltage stabiliser is a worthwhile safeguard for expensive equipment.

Ports & shipping

The main seaport is Mombasa Port, with inland delivery to Nairobi by SGR rail or road. Mombasa is also the transit gateway for Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan — a detail that matters if you are importing for onward distribution.

Import & customs clearance — PVoC explained

Kenya is the anchor for East African conformity requirements. Imports require KEBS PVoC (Pre-Export Verification of Conformity): the goods are inspected before shipment by an appointed body (Intertek, SGS, Bureau Veritas or similar) and issued a CoC (Certificate of Conformity). Without a CoC, your shipment faces penalties or rejection at Mombasa.

You also file an IDF (Import Declaration Form) through the KRA iCMS system, plus the IDF fee and Railway Development Levy (RDL). We cooperate fully with PVoC inspection and prepare all documents — invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificates — so clearance is smooth.
