Needle Breaking Frequently? Fix It Fast

Why industrial machine needles break repeatedly and how to stop it — fabric, needle and technique checks.

Frequent needle breakage is frustrating and slows production. It almost always has one of four causes.

1. Wrong needle for the fabric

A needle that is too fine for thick fabric bends and snaps. Match the needle size to the material — heavier fabric needs a larger needle.

2. Operator technique

Pulling the fabric through by hand bends the needle against the plate. Let the feed do the work and guide the fabric lightly.

3. Worn or damaged plate

A scored needle plate deflects the needle and causes breakage. Replace a damaged plate.

4. Machine timing

If needle and hook are out of sync, the needle strikes the hook and breaks. This requires a technician to re-time the machine.
