What Sewing Machine to Start a Tailoring Business

The minimum machine line-up to start a profitable tailoring business, and how to grow it as orders increase.

Starting a tailoring business does not need a huge investment. With the right two or three machines, you can serve most customers from day one.

The minimum set-up

  1. Lockstitch machine — your workhorse for nearly all seaming. The 6150D direct-drive model is ideal; the clutch-motor version is the budget alternative.

  2. Overlock machine — for professional edge finishing on knitwear and garments.

Growing your line

Once orders grow, add a second lockstitch machine and a buttonhole or bartack machine for specific garment types. For business-planning guidance, read how profitable a tailoring business can be.
