Single Needle vs Double Needle Sewing Machine
The difference between single and double needle machines, and when each is the right choice for your production.
A single needle machine sews one row of stitches; a double needle machine sews two parallel rows at once. The choice comes down to what you produce.
Single needle machines
These are the standard for garment seaming. One needle, one seam — perfect for shirts, trousers and most woven garments. The 6150D lockstitch is a typical single needle machine.
Double needle machines
A double needle walking foot machine sews two parallel seams in one pass. This is essential where twin seams are decorative or structural — bags, upholstery and car seat covers.
When to choose double needle
- Parallel topstitching on bags and luggage
- Sofa and furniture seams
- Car seat covers and interiors
- Any product needing consistent, evenly spaced twin rows
If you only make garments, a single needle is enough. If you make bags, upholstery or car interiors, the double needle machine roughly doubles your output on those seams.
