1. What will you sew?
Light woven garments need a high-speed lockstitch machine. Knitwear and edge finishing need an overlock machine. Leather, canvas and upholstery need a walking-foot or heavy-duty model.
2. Which motor?
Clutch motors are cheap to buy but loud and energy-hungry. Servo and direct-drive motors are quiet, controllable and far cheaper to run. For most buyers, the 6150D direct-drive lockstitch is the best all-round choice.
3. Which feed system?
Bottom feed suits light fabric. Walking-foot and compound feed are essential for thick or slippery material that must not shift during sewing.
4. What is your budget and volume?
Start small and grow. A new tailoring shop can begin with two machines; a garment factory needs a full line. Remember that energy-efficient motors pay for themselves in saved electricity.
