How to Fix Skipping Stitches on an Industrial Machine
Step-by-step diagnosis for skipped stitches — the most common sewing problem and how to solve it.
Skipped stitches are usually caused by one of three things: the needle, the hook, or the timing. Work through these in order.
1. Check the needle
A bent, blunt or wrong-size needle is the most common cause. Match the needle to the fabric weight and replace it with a fresh industrial needle.
2. Check the hook
A worn or damaged rotary hook cannot catch the needle thread reliably. If the hook point is dull or chipped, replace it.
3. Check timing
If needle and hook are out of sync, the loop is missed. This needs a technician to re-time the machine.
4. Check the feed and plate
A scored needle plate or worn feed dog causes the fabric to move unevenly and skip stitches. Replace them as a set.
